I got a great laugh at the end of this stage during the mega mushroom power-up. I was actually able to knock down the flagpole! Then Mario looks at it before shrugging it off, doing a strong man pose and shrinks back, uttering a line I haven't heard him say before and walking away to the next stage. Nice touch! :)
Edit: It seems that you were able to do this in the first NSMB too! Oh well, you learn something new everyday I suppose!.
