The great thing about having this on the 3DS is that you can switch between the first and second player controls by holding the L & R buttons and pressing Y. You can then save the game while the equipment screen is up by pressing up and A at the same time. Well, it's great to be able to get around that awkwardness the original version had anyway.
Other than that it's still the classic Zelda 1 in full 60Hz speed. It controls fine with the circle pad and if you're not used to it you will quickly. That's what I found myself on my own experience of course.
You can do that L & R trick to swap players with every other NES VC game on the 3DS also.
